May 24: This young catbird popped out from behind a tree and just posed for me. There are an amazing number of catbirds along North Wanamassa Drive; I see as many of them as I see warblers, and, of course, it's much easier to take a picture of a catbird. Because of the combination of gloom and shadow, I used a flash for this shot. Something I rarely do. But I've noticed that the birds seem to be completely at ease with a flash going off. Perhaps they just think it's lightning and ignore it. [Thanks to vogelman on the NatureNet forum for that thought.]
